For the front of my house, I recently bought a brand new planter made of Corten Steel. In terms of metals, this is the kind of metal that slowly oxidizes over the course of time. Instead of waiting for that to happen, I decided to apply a DIY rust accelerating treatment to it, which created a beautiful rust patina in just a few hours as a result.

Previously, I used to remove rust from the exterior metal of my home as it didn’t fit with my classic brick center-hall colonial home, which was located in a suburban area.

What Are Planters Made Out Of? Best outdoor planter material

7 Best Planter Materials: Expert Guide To Help You Choose Your Next Planter

A wide range of best outdoor potting plants materials are available on the market today. If you choose the right material, you will be able to make a significant difference in the health of your plants, as well as adding a significant amount of visual appeal to your interiors or exteriors. Planters are commonly made from a variety of materials, including:

  • Concrete planters
  • Fiberglass planters
  • Plastic planters
  • Ceramic planters
  • Terracotta planters
  • Foam planters

There are most durable outdoor planters that are made of natural materials materials for a garden such as wood and metal, but they do have their pros as well. Hopefully, this guide will cover the gamut, and with a little analysis, you will be able to choose the best planter for you and your plants.

Fiberglass Planters

There is no doubt that fiberglass is a relatively new and modern material. In order to create this composite, glass is spun into a fiber and then mixed with resin to create a material that is very strong and flexible. There are many different shapes and sizes that can be created from this fiberglass and resin mixture by putting it into a mold. After a few rounds of sanding and a layer of primer is applied to the fiberglass planter, it has a flawless and protective finish. To allow adequate drainage of water, drainage holes can be drilled into the bottom of the container.

There is no doubt that fiberglass containers are extremely strong and flexible. They can be used both indoors and outdoors and can withstand quite a bit of abuse. In addition, any little scratches or wear-and-tear can be easily buffed out or painted over if they appear.

Quality –

Due to Jay Scott’s attention to detail and high manufacturing standards, fiberglass pots from Jay Scott can deliver superior quality in terms of their strength and finish, although they are affordable, as a result of Jay Scott’s attention to detail and high manufacturing standards. In addition to their lightweight nature, fiberglass pots are also very durable. As a result, they are an ideal material for large pots.

Plant health –

Fiberglass is a material that is widely known for its plant-protective properties. In addition, fiberglass has many health benefits, such as UV protection for hot climates and waterproofing; and since fiberglass is not a porous material, it won’t leech any chemicals into the soil and harm your plants, which is great for growing edibles!

In comparison to heavier materials such as wood and metal, fiberglass pots are relatively cheap to produce, but they are more expensive than plastic and terracotta pots because they are more durable. Spend a little more money on a fiberglass planter if you want a planter that will stay as good as new for longer and will be healthier for your plants.

Manufacturer dependent

There are some manufacturers who cut corners when they produce this material. This is done by adding more resin and fillers to the product that have no structural benefit but do add to the weight of the product. Beware of heavy fiberglass planters, as this is a sign of an inferior product, and should not be purchased.

Concrete Planters

When concrete is made for any purpose, it is made by mixing cement paste with water, sand, and rock to create the final product, which is concrete. As part of the industrial concrete production process, a combination of chemicals, including calcium, silicon, aluminum, and iron, are used to help bind and harden the mixture together. In order to pour concrete into the desired shape, a mold is used to pour wet concrete into the desired shape. Unpainted concrete has a light gray color when it is left unpainted for a long period of time. You can, however, paint them any color you like using masonry paint.

7 Best Planter Materials: Expert Guide To Help You Choose Your Next Planter

Fiberglass planters vs. Concrete planters

The two materials that really stand out when it comes to long-term durability and a strong up-front investment are fiberglass and concrete. Despite the fact that both of these types of planters have a long lifespan and are extremely durable, concrete planters cannot be moved without the risk of structural damage to the property surrounding them. However, our larger fiberglass pots can still be moved easily even when they’re filled with soil and plants, even when they’re filled with soil and plants.

Planters made of concrete will feel coarser to the touch than those made of fiberglass. In spite of the fact that they are both capable of being painted in a variety of colors, concrete planters are always going to have a slightly muted tone to them due to the material they are made from. The overall quality of fiberglass planters makes them a more worthy option over other types of planters. As a result of fiberglass, you are going to have easier maneuverability, with brighter colors for the same long life expectancy.

Plastic Planters

In 1907, plastic was introduced to the world stage for the first time as a wonder material. The use of plastic in the manufacture of all kinds of containers has been widespread since then. There is a problem with plastic pots because they are made of crude oil, which is a non-renewable resource. There are, however, large industries that exist in order to extract, process, and then make use of the oil needed to make plastic containers. As of today, there are a wide range of types of plastic that can be used for a variety of purposes, such as uPVC, which is considered safe to use in the production of food.

Fiberglass planters vs. Plastic planters

Best material for outdoor planter boxes can represent a wide range of colors, but unfortunately, plastic is a very cheap substance and will look cheap as well. When it comes to the implementation of color in plastic planters, manufacturers often melt the plastic with the color added or dye the plastic and then add the color to it. This can make for some bright colors, but it reduces the overall quality of the color as a whole. Our painted fiberglass is made using the same paint that is used to give contemporary automobiles their sleek appearances as well as amazing reflections if the gloss paint is used.

Plant health will not be adversely affected by either of these planters. The disadvantage of plastic planters is that they are more likely to erode over time. Plastic can morph in high temperatures and crack in low temperatures, while fiberglass is superior when it comes to maintaining and regulating temperatures. There is no doubt that fiberglass is a much more durable material than plastic in general. As a result, it has a better ability to maintain its shape as well as its structural integrity for a much longer period of time.

Terracotta And Ceramic Planters

As far as ceramics and terracotta are concerned, they are essentially just minor variations of the same material, clay. Terracotta is the name given to a specific type of clay used in making pottery, and it does have a number of different properties. In terms of color, it has a distinctive reddish brown hue and has a rustic appearance, whereas ceramic is a lighter color clay that has a smooth finish. As opposed to terracotta, ceramics are often glazed on the outside, whereas ceramics are not.

The glazing on ceramic pots prevents your plants from leaking and keeps them hydrated as the glaze seals the pot and prevents water from escaping. Unglazed terracotta, on the other hand, looks great and is ideal for plants that like lots of drainage.

 Metal Planters

In the market today, there are a number of different types of metal containers, but the most common materials used for these containers are steel, aluminum, zinc, and copper. As an outdoor planter, metal containers, particularly steel ones, will rust over time, becoming reddish in colour over the years as a result of rusting. The outside elements speed up this process. It is important to note that metal materials are not porous, so to ensure optimal drainage, drill holes in the bottom of the container to allow water to drain out and to allow air to flow.

What Is Corten Steel?

The Corten steel brand (also known as Cor-Ten steel for the trademarked brand) was created with the intention of creating a weathered, rust-like appearance over time with exposure to the elements. This type of steel is also known as weathering steel and does not require you to paint or treat your raised beds with anything. It is expected that the material will develop a rusted patina on the surface, but it will never rust through.

In choosing materials for raised beds that will be used in a kitchen garden, we try to prioritize those that are natural, beautiful, durable, sustainable, as well as affordable for use in an edible garden. Despite the fact that corten steel isn’t the most affordable option on the market, you can’t find a much more durable option than steel, which can quite literally last a lifetime if properly looked after.

There has been a rapid increase in the popularity of corten steel, and many of our Rooted Garden customers choose corten steel for the beauty of the weathered appearance it offers. (In case you prefer a more sleek, modern look, you might want to consider powder coated metal, which has a smooth finish and is equally as durable.)

While the corten bed itself can be a bit expensive, you’ll save a lot of money in the long run by not having to replace rotted materials and ensure you’re able to make the most of your gardening space for a long period of time.

Let’s take a look at the benefits of using steel in your kitchen garden and why you should consider it.

There are several other major benefits to using steel, if your budget allows you to do so:

  • There is no doubt that core10 steel is a sustainable resource.
  • In the spring, the soil in a steel garden will start to warm up faster than the soil in a wood bed, so you can start gardening much earlier in the year.
  • The raised beds in the fall will allow you to keep the soil temperature more consistent during the cold spells by insulating the plants inside during cold spells.
  • There is no doubt that steel is a food-safe material (more on that in a bit).
  • In addition to being resistant to corrosion, corten steel box are also resistant to chipping, cracking, and peeling.
  • You can also easily match your raised beds to existing features of your home if you want to create a cohesive look for your garden by matching them to garden edging, planters, and even fire pits made from corten steel. The custom corten beds pictured above were created for a client by a steel designer to match the beautiful fire pit she has pictured below. Located just outside her living room window, she has access to an elegant outdoor sitting area as well as a variety of hardscapes made of corten steel.

Depending on the size of your space, you can choose from three different sizes.

Why We Love Corten Steel in a Kitchen Garden

As we’ve touched on the general form of corten steel up to this point, and we’ve talked about its use in building and other architectural projects, now let’s discuss how to grow plants in corten steel raised beds, and how to make sure they grow well. It is worth noting that in most environments, a corten steel raised bed actually has a higher corrosion resistance due to the atmospheric corrosion resistance that occurs. This makes the raised bed more corrosion resistant than other materials. In spite of this, using COR-TEN and understanding the process of patina formation will help you to determine what is the best placement and how to use it.

There are tons of uses for corten steel planter box besides its use in the construction and architecture of large buildings. There have been some great developments in the common production of weathering steel, and one of them is the creation of stylish and striking garden beds. Customers can choose from a variety of shapes and sizes for these corten steel beds, including traditional raised beds (such as the Birdies Urban Short 9-in-1 ), or even small planters that can be placed on top of railings or counters. In fact, there are even round planters that are excellent for any urban gardener who wants to have a beautiful garden.

Benefits of using Corten steel in the garden

  • There is almost no maintenance involved with it
  • There is no need to pre-treat the steel before installation in order to prolong its durability
  • It is not necessary to paint or seal Corten as a stable rust-like finish will naturally develop after several years of use
  • Because it has a special protective layer beneath the top layer of rust that prevents it from corroding, Corten, when used outdoors, is resistant to corrosion (usually a problem with using metal outside)
  • There are many benefits to having Corten as it is resistant to frost and cracking that can occur to metals in colder climates
  • During the course of time, as the steel is exposed to the weather, it becomes harder and stronger
  • As a result, it creates a modern, industrial landscape design element.

The Corten Steel Rusting Process and How To Speed it Up

Safety first

The first thing we need to talk about is safety. In case you haven’t handled chemicals before, you should either be very cautious or seek assistance from someone with experience. If you don’t feel confident, don’t handle chemicals.

Ensure that the solution goes in the right spot and that it’s sprayed correctly. Besides corroding steel and iron, it will also make those items rust. Keep those items away from the background (e.g., iron staircase railing, etc.).

In order to be successful in this job, you need to work outdoors where you will be protected from the wind, people, valuables, and where you will feel comfortable.

Obviously, do not spray the solution on people, pets, inhale the vapours, and do not get it in your eyes or on your skin. Then rinse it out immediately with water.

Step 1: Pickle the metal

How about pickling? In the same way as the vegetables! As well as vinegar, we use it.

By preparing the surface and rusting the metal evenly, we can penetrate the chemicals we will use later.

Put vinegar in a spray bottle and spray your corten steel fire pit, sculpture, or anything else you wish. Repeat this a few times so the vinegar really soaks in.

Using a sunny day will let your piece dry faster, so you can layer it.

Step 2: Rust the metal

Mix your solution now that you have it ready. Get your goggles and gloves on and prepare a solution by mixing 480 ml hydrogen peroxide, 60 ml white vinegar, and a teaspoon of salt.

Put your goggles and gloves on and mix together 480ml hydrogen peroxide with 60ml white vinegar and 1/2 teaspoon tart fresh foaming, and the rust will form within minutes. It really is that fast!

Dry the object (in the sun if possible) and then use your goggles and gloves to mix 480 ml of hydrogen peroxide with 60 ml of white vinegar and 1/2 teaspoon of whatever results you want.

Step 3: let it stay

When you are finished spraying, don’t touch the rust or fire pit after you have finished your work. Your hard work will be ruined if you try to remove it.

It’s important to remember that rust changes with the seasons and time, regardless of how fast you speed up this process. There are many factors that will affect the object’s appearance, including heavy rains, sun, and wind.

Advantages of Corten Steel

The corrosion resistance of Corten steel is one of its greatest advantages. In addition, the alloying elements in the metal form a protective layer that prevents moisture from penetrating the metal and corroding it. Ultimately, this means that you don’t have to worry about rust or corrosion.

Aside from being exceptionally strong and durable, corten steel also has a stunning appearance. Because of its excellent tensile strength, it is suitable for structures that must withstand heavy loads or extreme weather conditions. Additionally, Corten steel has a unique patina finish that adds an interesting visual texture to your structure’s exterior. For projects with a focus on aesthetics, this is the ideal choice.

What Are Corten Steel Planters?

In contrast to other rustic planter box materials, Corten steel is a weathering steel that naturally forms a protective coating that looks like rust over time. Since it has a longer lifespan than normal steel and develops a beautiful rustic finish over time, it is a great choice as a material for a rustic planter box.

A natural process of rusting occurs when this type of metal is exposed to the elements. It starts out unrusted but as time passes, you will see a difference in the texture and color of the metal garden containers. When exposed to extreme temperatures, Corten steel rusts faster and creates more drastic changes in its appearance than it does under normal conditions. The colors may range from brown to dark orange or a combination of both colors.

What Are The Pros And Cons Of Corten Steel Planters

It is important to note, however, that Corten steel may cause brown staining to the surrounding materials due to the rust effects. This is often the case when rust occurs on white concrete, paint, stucco, and stone. It is possible to reduce this issue by placing some type of matting under the Corten steel box so that it will not directly touch any surface surrounding it.

Almost everyone has seen some version of a rusted metal planter box out in public. Perhaps you’ve even seen them placed around outdoor shopping areas or even in front of popular restaurants. So why do rusted metal planters boxes make such an ideal choice for decorating both residential and commercial spaces?

The shape of corten steel planter boxes tends to be rectangular or long with a rusted steel finish to help achieve a modern, rustic, yet fashionable look to any indoor or outdoor setting.

Planters that are made from rust are versatile and complement other landscaping elements well. In spite of how you would think that working with this bulky, solid metal box planter is going to be difficult, you’ll find that this product can really be used for creative purposes. For instance, you can use accessories such as dividers, bench tops, trellises, and casters to combine with your planter box.

As can be seen in the picture below, the rusty planter metal boxes includes decorative privacy screens that provide privacy for areas like patios, backyards and open seating areas in the outdoor space.

Do Corten Steel Planters Last For A Long Time?

Corten big lots planter boxes are unquestionably made from durable materials, which means they are destined to last even under adverse conditions for a long time, and they are designed to last a lifetime, regardless of the conditions. A Corten metallic planter box direct life expectancy is dependent upon drainage, the climate, and the thickness of the steel used. Every job is different, and there is no definitive answer as to whether it will last.

If you have inadequate drainage, you will decrease the lifespan of your metal planting boxes. If you have inadequate drainage, then you can have the metal planter box out of service very quickly. It is important for Corten Steel to undergo wet and dry cycles so that it can get wet as well as dry. The weathering steel inside the planter box will rust through a lot more quickly if it is constantly wet.

What Are The Pros And Cons Of Corten Steel Planters

To protect your planter boxes metal from premature corrosion, it is recommended that an inexpensive emulsion sealer be applied to the inside to protect it from corroding.

Despite the fact that this material can withstand extreme heat or cold temperature conditions, you should avoid using it in coastal or salt-laden environments as the salt reduces the ability of the steel to develop a protective coating that would reduce the rate of rusting.

A corrosion resistance plate made of 1/8″ or 11 gauge steel will last significantly longer than one made of thinner steel. Thickness is one of the most important factors to consider. We recommend 1/8″ thickness at least, but heavier steel will be more expensive.

A good thing about Corten steel is that it can be maintained easily and is extremely durable. Even if it is damaged or scratched, the rusting material will smooth out the visible marks over time to cover them up. Weathering steel can provide many advantages since rust serves as a protective coating that prevents corrosion.

As a disadvantage of Corten steel, the construction of the planter box may require special welding techniques if you plan on making your own. It is strong enough to withstand the weight of plants and soil, but make sure that the Corten steel round planter box is properly welded together to ensure its strength.

Benefits Of Corten Steel Planters

Long-term durability. Corten steel will lose very little material very slowly when it is exposed to the elements. The precise rate at which it oxidizes and loses material also depends on the environmental conditions where the planter is placed. However, if the process occurs slowly, the planter box metal can last many years before it becomes worn out.

A Corten planter is made out of steel, a durable and long-lasting metal, that can last for many years. Though the degree of durability depends on the climate, the amount of drainage, and the thickness of the material, it can last for many years.

What Are The Pros And Cons Of Corten Steel Planters

Using Corten steel, you will get a unique patina over the course of time that is reminiscent of rust, bronze, and copper. This patina is ideal for combining with a wide range of planting schemes, both naturalistic and architectural. Adding this item to your garden, patio, backyard, or even the entrance to your hotel or restaurant will add an air of rustic yet modern style.

There are many uses for weathering steel, including landscaping, exterior construction, and garden decoration. The Watbick Corten Steel Planters can be combined in different shapes and sizes to create a beautiful landscape or to draw boundaries between them. The Corten Steel Planters are the ideal choice for contemporary garden designs.

Corten Steel Planter : 3 Things You Should Know About …

A group of steel alloys, commonly referred to as weathered steel, is known as Corten steel, a weathered steel alloy that can be used in outdoor art projects and construction. Corten steel is a weathered steel alloy that is widely known for its tensile strength and durability. In the beginning, Corten steel was designed so that the steel would not need to be maintained if left outside for an extended period of time. Therefore, it had to be painted frequently or the environment controlled in order to maximise the durability of the material.

In the 1930s, Corten steel was developed by the United States of America. This much-needed commodity was developed for railroad coal wagons. Corten steel became widely popular after its use on coal wagons. It has been widely used for various outdoor projects since then for various purposes. The success with coal wagons was the beginning of Corten’s immense popularity.

It may surprise you to learn that the word Corten in Corten steel refers to the COR-TEN steel.

In Corten steel, corrosion resistance is called COR, and tensile strength is called TEN. Corten steel develops a rusted appearance when exposed to the eternal elements. Despite its appearance, this rust does not corrode the material. Instead, it forms a protective layer that protects the structure from further corrosion. A patina layer slows the corrosion process, and it takes at least a decade for the steel to weaken. Using Corten steel is a good option if one doesn’t want to worry about painting the material or weatherproofing it from time to time. While protecting the structure, the rust layer also offers the structure a rustic and earthy appearance.
