A rotor shaft is an essential component of an electric motor, as it sits on top of the laminated core of the rotor and is the transmission shaft that transfers the electrically induced torque to the shaft via the corresponding positive connection, which is associated with the transmission.

 In addition to the requirement for bearing the rotor and the various attachments, the design of the rotor shaft also has a great deal to do with its cooling concept. Additionally, the design of the rotor shaft is very much dependent on the choice of cooling concept for the electric motor. As an electric motor gets larger and longer, as well as a larger and longer rotor shaft, it becomes easier to design both new cooling and lightweight components with a hollow shaft. 

Rotor shafts are exposed to very high loads because of their high rotation speeds and high torques up to over 20.000 rpm.
