The definition of a flange
An external or internal anchor flange is a protruding ridge, lip, or rim that can increase strength, facilitate attachment to another object, or assist in stabilizing and guiding the movements of a machine. In many cases, flanges are attached using bolts in a bolt circle pattern.
Spectacle blinds are made up of two pieces, a spade and a spacer, which are manufactured to be installed together as a single unit. When the pipe or equipment is being inspected or decommissioned, this is used as a safety device to isolate that particular section or equipment from the rest of the pipe or equipment. The spectacle blinds provide additional flexibility during the maintenance and operation of the system as well as for maintenance. The process of adjusting spectacle blinds is quite straightforward. Some piping applications may require new gaskets.
A Spade and Spacer serve the same function as a spectacle blind – they are essentially a simplistic valve. They are bolted into place between two slip on flange in a pipeline. Due to their bulky nature, they are sometimes chosen over spectacle blinds.
A spacer is used when the line needs to be open, and a spade is used when the line needs to be blocked or closed, so the spacer (a ring-shaped plate) is installed when the line needs to be both open and blocked.
There is a requirement to remove half of the surrounding bolts in order to change from one type to another and swap the Spade or Spacer over. This should be followed by the reinstallation and tightening of the bolts.
There is a particular handle that is shaped in a particular way for each spade or spacer, which allows engineers and maintenance crews to identify whether or not a spade or spacer is installed in the pipeline by the handle shape. Spades and spacers that are smaller in size often have a hole in the handle, while spades that are larger in size usually won’t have a hole in the handle.
